This July 9, legendary skateboarder and multiple world record holder Danny Way, is planning to be the first person ever to attempt to jump over the Great Wall on a skateboard. He will also be the first person to attempt a jump over the Great Wall since the death of Wang Jiaxiong, who fatally injured himself while trying it on a bicycle in October 2002. The jump will take place 20 miles north of Beijing at a section of the Great Wall called Ju Yu Gong Gate. Apart from merely surviving the attempt, Danny hopes to break two of his current world records and set a new one for speed.
Danny and his ramp building team first came to China six months ago to begin preparations for a massive take-off and landing ramp, which is not simply designed to allow him to clear a 20 or 30 foot-wide section of wall, but an entire gate perched on top of it. The ramp has been designed so that he will have to clear a distance of at least 80 feet to be successful. In order to do this he will drop in from a 120 foot tall role-in tower, and fly off the top of a 55 foot high launch ramp. The landing portion of the ramp is 44 feet tall and 48 feet wide, with a 30 foot tall, 100 foot wide quarter pipe at the end, which is where he plans to set a new world record for the highest air. The ramp is a marvel in itself; it is reported to have cost over $700,000 US to build, and is the largest skateboarding structure ever made.
If he survives his jump over the Great Wall, Danny is scheduled to go on to enter the X-Games championships in Los Angeles. Then it's on to New York to perform his infamous "Bomp Drop" maneuver on the Late Show with David Letterman; but instead of using a helicopter, he will jump off an 8 story building into a 40 foot high half-pipe, without a parachute.
