Moon Place

Post by Jon »

Here are some pictures from the Moon place. We picked up this property in April and have been rehabbing it since then. It’s in southern Indiana about a mile from Patoka Lake and about 15 miles from French Lick Indiana. We call it the Moon place because we bought it from the Moons but it had belonged to Mrs Moon who grew up in the house. Her maiden name was Gilliat and it had been in her family for about 100 years. The property is about 180 acres in a rough square and is bordered on 3 sides by thousands of acres of Hoosier National Forest land. There is a small house (1961) on the property (800 ft2) on a full basement. Most of the pictures are focused on the house as that is where the focus has been. The house was abandoned about 8 years ago so it was pretty rough inside. It was broken into and the copper (pipes and wire) where exposed were torn out. The place wasn’t vandalized so the windows, walls and floors were in ok shape. Wherever there was water supply the floors were bad so we tore the floors out in the bathroom and under the sink in kitchen. We re-floored and put in vinyl both places. The floors in the bedrooms are exposed fir and the living room is oak. The sub-floors are all white oak. We now have hot water, electricity but no heat yet. There is a huge wood or coal burning furnace in the basement that reminds me of the end of Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel. Water comes from a pipe stuck through a hole in the wall but we’re not sure if the water is coming from a well or the pond on the property. Right next to the house is a newer 40 *36ft garage with doors on front and back. The garage is great and is serving as our staging area. We moved the trailer onto the property and the AC in the trailer saved us this summer. My buddy Tony has been helping me with a lot of the technical stuff like rewiring and plumbing and has been a huge help. We’ve also fixed all the doors, gutters, roof, windows and power washed the vinyl. Ready to move in!

Man that looks so awesome! Its going to keep your renovating urges satisfied for a while i suspect. With all that state forest around i would suggest a walk-in freezer in the basement will be one of the first priorities!

Made a trip between Xmas and New-years. There was snow on the ground and while I was there we got about another half a foot. Carrie and I were down last weekend too and are getting the second bedroom floors ready to urethane. We also cut and stacked a bunch of wood. Good fun!

Here are a few pics from the Birthday Weekend. My friend Tony made the trailer out of an old fuel drum. Dave-note the pump-up sprayer filled with kerosene. Part of the weekend we spent pulling junk out of the shed and going through it. Lots of newspapers from 73-74. (Nixon and Watergate).

The trailer was made from half of a fuel tank and Tony had been giving me jugs of kerosene to try to empty the tank (to make the trailer). Anyway, if you get a solvent-stable deck sprayer you can start some brush fires on fire pretty easily. If you get the pressure right and the particle size right you can write your name in the sky.

A added a picture of the deer caught with the security/game camera.

Looks like a great place, I really love the photo of the tracks in the snow and the white tree lined lane...

Yes it is a IR camera and I set it up on the house because this place is straight out of 'Winter's Bone' (if you haven't seen the movie -rent it!). Also the crazy act with the kerosene is just that- a total act. I would never play with a flamable liquid under pressure and shot onto a hot fire. But I wanted to make sure that it was a convincing act and if I could convince Dave then I knew I could fool the locals. The act is so that the locals understand that there is a crazy-f*@# living there and you better be careful if your hobby is recycling copper. So far so good. Last weekend Andy and a couple of his buddies spent the weekend and they helped to perpetuate the crazy act so now hopefully the locals are thinking that there's a whole clan of us. We also shot some clay birds too for emphasis.

Ah, I thought so, its great what can be done with digital image manipulation these days. Hope you are using buckshot for that skeet shooting.

Carrie and I were at the place this past weekend. Carrie mowed and I did some digging and dirt hauling. The previous weekend I had been at the cabin with Tony and his son Remi. Remi was really interested in insects and so we set up the black light and were attracting a lot of interesting things.
